In his 300th adventure, Skye Fargo is headed east, where he's been hired by a group of Illinois citizens to stop the murderous "Sagamon River Monster." For years, entire families have been slaughtered without mercy, and none who pursue the Monster are ever heard from again.

Insanity is only a state of mind...

After being duped into a bank robbery in Austin, Texas, John Slocum finds himself hunted by a Texas Ranger and his posse. He’s saved by the beautiful Gretchen Helmann, but there’s a price. Gretchen’s dastardly brother has had their father put away in an insane asylum in order to take over the family ranch—and she wants Slocum to get him out at all costs.

But when Slocum gets to the funny farm, he soon learns that there’s more than one kind of crazy—and that getting out of the madhouse is going to be a lot harder than getting in...

THE LAST SURPRISE

“Slocum!”
The unexpected use of his name caused Slocum to whirl about and stare Carbuncle right in the eye. It was a toss-up which man was more surprised.
“How’d you—” Carbuncle wasn’t the quickest thinker in the world, but he knew Slocum shouldn’t be in the Breiland Institute for the Insane. The outlaw went for his pocket and had a Derringer half pulled out when Slocum reacted. He bent. Grabbed the handle of his knife and swept up in a smooth motion that ended with the blade buried in Carbuncle’s chest. Slocum felt the tip of the blade bounce off a rib and then slice through the man’s heart. Carbuncle looked down at the blade in his chest, then up at Slocum.
“No,” he said in a curiously ordinary voice, and then he died.
