Our pick of the Best Writers Conferences for 2009
Being updated to 09
Conference Criteria: The majority of writers want to learn to sell
what they write. A good conference must stress technique and try to teach the aspiring writer to sell or a selling writer
to upgrade his or her skills. Having run a writers conference in California for 12 years, here are the criteria that
Karen and I established.
A good conference should offer such things as Writing fiction that sells: Romance, Murder
mysteries, Science fiction and more, Travel Writing, Writing for Magazines, Non Fiction which includesl genre such, Pop
psychology, How-to, Business, Self improvement, History, Science and more. Poetry with the emphasis on how to sell,
Memoir (not counted as non-fiction), Screenwriting and similar categories. They should also feature Agents, Authors, Editors,
Publishers and publicists. We don't ask that a conference provide all of these. But we do ask that they focus on getting
their attendees in print. Some of the outstanding conferences are the ASJA conference in New York (non-fiction only)
and the PN WA Summer Writers Conference in the State of Washington. Conferences that stress academic creative writing get
marked down by us.
These are the conferences that in the our list this year. If any conference director
thinks their conference meets out criteria, please e-mail us at dnew@thegrid.net

Karen Newcomb, 101 Best Conference Coordinator
Want
to Attend a Writers Conference?
Everybody needs to go to a conference at least once. For ten years (along
with Bud Gardner) we ran the Sierra Writing Camp a teaching camp for writers in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains. It was one of the best things we ever did.
Conferences provide
inspiration and get you working at top speed. It also gives you a chance to pick up techniques and make contact with authors
and agents.
The
trick is to choose the right conference for you. Some conferences are dedicated to literary fiction and non-fiction. Others
put their energy into teaching attendees to write commercial fiction books and articles still others concentrate on poetry.
You need to send for and read the literature carefully.
Here
are some tips for getting the most out of a conference.
- Read
the brochure carefully: Then ask yourself Is the purpose of this conference compatible with the writing I
want to do? Do the teachers or speakers look interesting? Do they give me a chance to shift classes? Will they look at my
material? All of these vary from conference to conference.
- Decide what you need to get out of the
conference: If
you decide for instance that you want to learn all you can about publishing your book go to any extra
meetings offered ask as many questions as possible meet as many editors and agents as you can. All of
this will give you insight
- Submit a manuscript if possible. Some conferences give you a chance
to submit manuscripts in advance for critiques; others require it for admission to the conference. Still others hold manuscript
contests. Take advantage of all of these. The feedback can be valuable.
- Do some writing at the conference: When
you get a little extra time spend it writing and try to use some of the new techniques you have picked up.
In some cases the speakers will look at the material you have written there and offer suggestions.
- Make appointments with editors and agents: Editors and
agents often
give attendees 15 to 30 minutes to talk about their work. Their comments can be invaluable. Sometimes they will give you a
hint or two about how to make a manuscript more acceptable. In some cases they will ask to see the manuscript
or a proposal when completed.
- Make friends: This may be the most valuable tip I can give you.
They can be helpful at the conference. But if you keep in touch afterwards they can be of constant
encouragement. Some attendees set up critique groups with conferees who live near them.
- Follow up: After you get home
follow up with any agents or editors who have encouraged you to contact them. There have been a number of published books
generated by these follow-ups. Be sure your manuscript is the best you can make it before sending it in. I have had some sad
experiences in the past with writers who refused to submit a polished proposal for a non-fiction book. The result was complete
failure.
